ABOUT QM BAR SOCIETY

Dedicated Students

Queen Mary Bar Society is a student run society, with its main aim being to demystify the Bar of England and Wales and to offer legal opportunities to students. This includes work experience placements, networking, competitions, talks and panels to boost QMUL student's knowledge of law in practice.

The profile of QMUL’s undergraduate students is distinctive for a Russell Group university in that 91% of us are from state schools; 62% are BAME; 42% are the first into Higher Education in their families; and 27% are from households where the annual taxable income is less than £15,000 p/a. At Queen Mary Bar Society we are committed to make the Bar represent & reflect our student population; inclusivity is one of our fundamental core values, it is intrinsic to who we are. It is our society's mission to dispel the preconceived notions that the Bar is an elitist profession and very difficult to permeate. We want to show students from all backgrounds that there is a place at the Bar for them, irrespective of the obstacles that they may face by providing networking and mentoring opportunities. Queen Mary Bar Society exists to change the statistic that only 12.7% of the practicing bar is now BAME.

We are self-funded and rely entirely on sponsorships and membership fees. If you represent an organisation that can provide any financial support to the society and our initiatives, then please contact info@queenmarybarsociety.org
